 We welcome you to the Bangla Online Language teaching programme. As lots of people have approached us, asking us if we would be able to do something for the Bangla learners all over the world, especially the diasporic Indians, or Bangladeshis, settled in different parts of the world, Bangla Online is our response to them. We have produced this programme for those who love Bangla language, literature and culture but have no avenue to learn the language or learn about its rich literary heritage and are located in different parts far away from India and Bangladesh . We thought this could be an opportunity for us, to create something, which will be very relevant for people from all walks of life, for all those who would like to learn the language for different purposes. As is well-known, Bangla or Bengali is one of the ten biggest language groups in the world. It has had its origin from the Old Indo Aryan language and so it has retained the character of Aryan, but it has also imbibed lots of features of various other languages with which speakers of Bangla language had to live for centuries together. It is a language, which has had a thousand year of recorded history, and a musical heritage, which goes back to about eight to nine hundred years of independent innovations.

Bangla has a vibrant art tradition and record of architecture, sculpting and various other forms of creative expressions, which are all quite unique.
The language is also spoken in nearby states around Bangladesh and West Bengal . It is a language which is very popular in Assam , Tripura, Bihar , Orissa, and in several other places. So it is not just a question of teaching only about the culture, as it is found the heart land of Bengal , but also about the cultural context in which Bangla is located, or situated.
I am sure those of you, who would be students of this programme, or participants of this course, will greatly enjoy browsing through various facilities, which have been created here. And this is also an example of collaboration and cooperation between two institutions. We would definitely like your suggestions for improvement, or for modifications, which we can assure you, we would keep on doing constantly. So, welcome to Bangla Online.

We
welcome you to the Bangla Online programme,
jointly launched by Central Institute of Indian
Languages, Mysore and Netaji Subhash Open University,
Kolkata. This is a language-learning programme
done in collaboration with this institute and
it is aimed at two kinds of audience, two kinds
of learners, specialists as well as those who
are interested in learning Bengali Language.
We have created a fairly comprehensive course,
which will cater to the demands of learners
who are living outside India or outside the
state of West Bengal as well as to the huge
diaspora, spread all over the world. And I believe,
this is going to be very fruitful kind of course,
catering to the needs of many learners, in many
countries, all over the world, who want to learn
Bengali, not only the language, but also want
to learn something about Bengali ethos and Bengali
heritage. I am sure that this is going to be
a very useful programme for all learners of
Bengali Language.
